It is not uncommon, to find medical malpractice lawsuits based on the failure of a physician to diagnose an infection in a timely manner and appropriately treat it.
It is unusual to see a medical malpractice lawsuit based on a medical practitioner causing an infection in a patient. It is not uncommon, however, to find lawsuits based on the failure of a physician to diagnose an infection in a timely manner and appropriately treat it.
Although there are useful – even necessary bacteria – such as those found in our gastrointestinal systems, others are responsible for conditions like the common cold or more severe infections that can fulminate, potentially leading to death.
The question is, can science harness the microorganism and use it to our advantage?
It appears that some infectious agents have the capacity to invade a healthy cell and reprogram it so that it becomes a virus factory. These agents, it is believed, can elevate themselves from single-celled microorganisms into multi-cellular organisms containing nuclei.
The trick is to be able to reverse or harness the process to engineer bacteria that can be used to identify infection. Research coming out of the Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices at the University of Maryland that this is possible.
Perhaps one day, debugging a person with unwanted bacteria will be as common an exercise as debugging a computer.
